Olive Grace Quennell was born in Richmond, Victoria in 1883. She was the 11th child of William and Mary Quennell who had both emigrated from Surrey, England in the 1850s. Olive was known as ‘Dolly’ but the reasons behind this pet name are lost in time. Dolly married the kiwi sailor Alexander Migan in 1908. I presume they met in Melbourne which was a frequent port of call for Alex on fine wooden barques carrying kauri timber to the Australian markets. Dolly and Alexander raised two children, Alex junior was born in New Zealand in 1909 and my grandmother, Thelma Mary was born in Melbourne in 1912. Olive’s first name lives on as my mother’s middle name and her maiden name lives on in my Aunty Rae’s middle name.
